Those of you who have read an article I wrote for the New Zealand Journal of Astrology exploring symbols of earthquakes for New Zealand/Wellington in the coming few years may have registered the significance of the first few months of 2019, with its eclipses and various other astrological omens.
In this short post I use this article and its predictions to stimulate thoughts on astrological objectivity. How separate can we ever be from our work?
Parihaka - Has Its Time Come?
Today marks the 137th anniversary of the invasion by government troops of the Maori settlement of Parihaka, in Taranaki, New Zealand. A community established in 1865, towards the end of the second Taranaki land war, it consisted of people from all over Taranaki and beyond who were dispossessed of their land. It attracted those who chose to come together to live in an intentionally peaceful community to resist further land confiscation. Since then this small, physically isolated village has become a potent symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of aggressive domination. It could be considered a profound New Zealand equivalent of the more widely-known Gandhian non-violent action against oppression.
In this long post I explore the fascinating astrology of this terrible event, and the current possibilities for redemption.
Transmission Gully: the astrology of a roading project
Transmission Gully is the name of a massive road-building project, involving the construction a 4-lane motorway between Paekakariki and Porirua in the Wellington area, New Zealand. Controversial due to its high cost, environmental implications, the challenging terrain and the earthquake-prone route, it has been promoted as a road that will provide less-congested access into Wellington as well as an alternative to the three main ways into the city, all of which might be cut off in the event of a severe earthquake. The road is expected to be completed in 2020.
The project was officially started on the 8th September 2012, although work didn’t begin on the route for some months. However, this date was marked with a ‘turning the sod’ ceremony by the then-Prime Minister John Key. Photo records show this to have taken place at 1:41pm, just outside Paekakariki, and the chart below is drawn for this moment.

Where is the Duck? A light example of a Horary Question.
Here is an example of a recent horary question from my practice, asked by someone whose son had lost his duck. Whilst it might contain some unfamiliar and distracting technical language, I hope it shows you how this form of astrology provides a marvellously practical tool for addressing daily practical concerns…
Crossing the Divide: North meets South as Korean leaders shake hands
The symbolism in the formal pageantry of North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un walking down grand steps, flanked by his aides and security staff, towards the South Korean president Moon Jae-In couldn’t be missed, being such a key moment in the politics of an incredibly volatile zone. This was particularly so when he walked across the border - the first time for any North Korean President - and shook Moon’s hand (see here for a news item on this)…
Predicting the Melbourne Cup
It's the Melbourne Cup tomorrow, and though I am not a gambling man, and despite realising that I am running the risk of associating my work as an astrologer with something arguably quite dodgy, I can't help but be intrigued by astrology's predictive tradition and how this is shown in such events. I love to see astrology's symbolic strength in all sorts of situations, from the hallowed to the profane. And this sort of thing helps to remind us of astrology's ultimately divinatory nature.
Astrological Symbolism in Horse Racing, an example: The 8 o'clock at Franklin
I’m not a betting man - honestly. But I’ve been captivated by the technique of the late British astrologer, John Addey, as outlined in John Frawley’s Sports Astrology, for - quite simply - predicting the winner of a horse race. It’s been many a Friday of late that I’ve dragged my kids into the TAB to place my $1 bets. Though I still need to get the helpful staff to talk me through the process, I’m getting the hang of it, and my horses have won more than they’ve lost. And this is with no knowledge of the ‘sport’ whatsoever.

Solar Eclipse and 2011 NZ General Elections
Yesterday morning I was interviewed on Radio New Zealand’s Morning Report about tomorrow’s partial eclipse of the sun, specifically concerning the national Elections that are being held the next day. I always feel a profound nervousness when asked by the mainstream media for an astrological opinion, as I’ve seen many of my colleagues suffer under an interviewer’s ignorant cynicism. I don’t see such ‘opportunities’ doing anything positive for astrology. But this interview was short and specific enough for it not to get into questions of credulity or my sanity.

Dan Carter’s groin injury on Saturday during a practice session before the All Black’s game against Canada has come as devastating news to New Zealand rugby fans. The injury came only hours after it was announced that he was stepping up to replace Richie McCaw as captain for the game later that day.
The New Zealand Dollar
This magazine exclusive conjures up a wonderful - if fanciful - image: John Key sitting down with his Celestial Magus in the cobwebbed basement of the Beehive, discussing transits to the Dollar’s birth chart...! But they seem to be working from a different chart to me - and I suspect his smile would be less enthusiastic if he really understood the genuine astrology of the Dollar and its sensitivity to imminent global trends.
